Providing a Safe Place to Play

Employee Volunteers Build A Playground For Children in Need

FOX Sports Ohio’s community effort, FOX Supports Ohio, joined forces with the PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., and KaBOOM! on Thursday, May 5th to build a playground for the children of Rainey Institute.

FOX Sports Ohio employee volunteers spent the day working with 200 PNC employees and residents of the local community to provide more than 600 children in the Cleveland community with a safe place to play.

Today’s kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This Play Deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically as well as mentally and socially. KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. For 15 years, KaBOOM! has been fighting the Play Deficit and saving play by ensuring there is a great place to play within walking distance of every child.

Rainey Institute provides arts education programs for children in Cleveland and has been serving the community since 1904. Prior to May 5th, the children who attend Rainey Institute did not have a playground to enjoy.

Today, more than 600 children are able to play on a jungle gym, slide, swings, and other apparatuses as well as enjoy picnic tables, giant game boards and art equipment. The new playground’s design is based on drawings created by children who participated in a Design Day event in March.
"I was very excited to have the FOX Sports Ohio staff involved in building our beautiful new playground.  Our students are enjoying the playground on a daily basis.  Thanks FOX Sports Ohio," states Lee Lazar, Executive Director, Rainey Institute.
