Maple Heights Student Video Wins Be On TV Contest

FOX Sports Ohio and the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) are excited to announce the winner of their Teen “Be On TV” contest that ran in support of National Teen Driver Safety Week October 16 thru 22. Ohio teens were encouraged to submit their own video telling their friends why it’s important to follow safe driving practices.

The video entitled “Texting While Driving” by students of Maple Heights High School has been selected by the network and ODPS to air during the Cleveland Cavaliers game this season.

Maple Heights’ winning video, made by and starring students Brandon Clay and Kadeem Hatten, offers a unique look at the dangers of texting while driving. The video will be posted here on FOXSportsOhio.com and on Facebook as well.

When reviewing the entries from all over the state of Ohio (approximately 30), ODPS and FOX Sports Ohio narrowed it down to six finalists, all whose videos will be posted on FOX Sports Ohio’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Raising awareness for teen driver safety is critical because 16-year-olds have the highest crash rate per mile driven of any age group and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens aged 16 to 18. In partnering with ODPS, FOX Sports Ohio hopes to raise awareness for this issue and promote smart and safe driving practices among Ohio’s teens.http://www.foxsportsohio.com/

FOX Sports Ohio is excited to welcome Natalie Taylor to the Columbus Blue Jackets broadcast team as the new sideline reporter.

An Ohio native, Natalie joins the network with over eight years’ experience as a sports reporter and news broadcaster. She is a huge NHL hockey fan and is thrilled to be covering the Columbus Blue Jackets. Local viewers will recognize Taylor from WSYX / WTTE, where she has anchored weekend sports segments, reported for “Good Day Columbus,” hosted “The Football Fever,” and served as on-site reporter for high school football.

Taylor has a wealth of experience reporting for additional sports networks across the country, including FOX Sports Florida / Sun Sports, FOX Sports Midwest, ESPN 2, Comcast SportsNet, Outdoor Live Network (now Versus), and more. Taylor is also no stranger to FOX Sports Ohio, as she was a reporter for the network’s Bowling Green State University programs in 2003.

Taylor’s first game will be Thursday, December 8th, when the Blue Jackets play host to the Nashville Predators at Nationwide Arena at 7pm. During this game, Taylor will share the sideline with John Michael. FOX Sports Ohio’s “Season of Support” Is Underway

As Ohio’s leading regional sports network, FOX Sports Ohio is proud to give back to the community this holiday season. Its charitable effort, FOX SupPORTS Ohio, has launched “Season of Support,” a program in which serves the underprivileged in the Cleveland and Columbus communities through raising awareness, fundraising, and volunteering.

Awareness and Fundraising Campaign for Columbus After-School All-Stars

FOX Sports Ohio has partnered with the Columbus After-School All-Stars to raise awareness and funds for the non-profit organization. In a mission to provide free, quality comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and in life, Columbus After-School All-Stars provides comprehensive programming to elementary and middle school children.

FOX Sports Ohio has been working with Columbus After-School All-Stars to boost awareness of their causes through a series of PSA’s and features to run on the network. FOX Sports Ohio’s production crew visited Southmoor Middle School and Heyl Elementary School to gather footage. Columbus Blue Jackets Derek Dorsett, Derick Brassard, and John Moore joined the network’s visit to Heyl Elementary to speak with students about the importance of school and fitness as well as assist with sports clinics. The features shot at the schools will run on FOX Sports Ohio during Blue Jackets Live pregame shows.

Photos taken at the visit to Heyl Elementary School with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The network will also feature a special “Season of Support” Blue Jackets telecast committed to raising awareness for the Columbus After-School All-stars on December 8, when the Jackets play the Nashville Predators at Nationwide Arena at 7pm. The PSA’s and features will run during the pre-game show as well as throughout the game. FOX Sports Ohio will also interview children who benefit from the program.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are also supporters of Columbus After-School All-Stars and recently donated street hockey equipment to be used in three schools in which the program operates: Heyl Elementary School, Southmoor Middle School and Champion Middle School.

Season of Support Collection Drive for Cleveland Foodbank and Toys for Tots

Now through December 31st, employees and guests of FOX Sports Ohio and its neighboring businesses are invited to participate in a collection drive for the Cleveland Foodbank and Toys for Tots. FOX Sports Ohio is currently hosting a collection drive at its Broadview Heights headquarters. Collection boxes are located in the main entrance lobby of the network’s Broadview Heights headquarters as well in as the other building in the South Hills Blvd. Industrial Park. The Cleveland Foodbank is in need of nonperishable food and household items and Toys for Tots collects toys for children in need throughout Greater Cleveland.

Volunteering at the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center “Twinkle Shop”

FOX Sports Ohio has been a long-time supporter of Cleveland’s Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center (DVCAC), and this holiday season provides staff the opportunity to give their time. In mid-December, the DVCAC hosts the “Twinkle Shop,” which provides women and children in need with the chance to shop and give to their families over the holidays. FOX Sports Ohio employees spend the evening supervising children and helping them make holiday crafts and gifts.
While preparing to televise its final H.S. football game of 2011 between Eastlake North and Willoughby South, FOX Sports Ohio learned of Eastlake North's place kicker, Anthony Bagliano.
FOXSportsOhio.com's story that ran on MSN's main carousel packaged the story with a video and photo gallery less than 24 hours prior to the live game.

*The feature by Sam Amico was the 2nd-highest viewed in the month, drawing more than 30X the audience of a typical front-page article.

*The photo gallery was the 2nd-most visited in October, earning 8X the page views of the next-highest gallery.

*FOX Sports Ohio’s high school producer Jeff Platz put together a special video feature  that aired during FOX Sports Ohio’s live telecast of the game as well as on FOXSportsOhio.com. This video had the most hits of any FOX RSN's site during the month of October.

*Despite being a battle of unranked teams, the Thursday streaming (run in parallel with live telecast) registered 3X the viewership of the previous three weeks, and was the 3rd most viewed video stream of the entire season.

Ohio Teens: Here’s Your Chance to be on TV!

FOX Sports Ohio Calls for Teen Driver Safety Videos in Support of the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Efforts for Teen Driver Safety Week

Ohio teenagers now have the chance to be creative, make their own video, and maybe even be on television! The Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) recognizes National Teen Driver Safety Week October 16 thru 22 and FOX Sports Ohio is showing support by providing local teenagers an opportunity to be on television in November.

How can safe driving teens be on TV? ODPS is asking them to create and submit a video telling their friends why it’s important to follow safe driving practices. This video should incorporate the slogan “Drive by the Rules. Keep the Privilege.” Guidelines, rules and regulations, and the entry form are posted at www.FOXSportsOhio.com/pages/teendriversafety. Teen videos submitted from 2009 Teen Driver Safety Week are also posted online. Here is the winner of the 2009 campaign!

ODPS will select the video(s) to air during a FOX Sports Ohio telecast. Other selected videos that follow the guidelines will be posted on FOXSportsOhio.com as well as FOX Sports Ohio’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
The video entry deadline is October 31, 2011.

Among the nine are the highest-scoring game in club history, the Jackets’ most lopsided win, the game that clinched their first playoff appearance, and a last-minute win secured when Rick Nash scored “the Goal”. The top four games, as voted on by fans via FOXSportsOhio.com, will make the air, with the first game on Monday, Sept. 5 at 6pm. Serving Hungry Guests in Need

This week, FOX Sports Ohio employees volunteered at Walnut Hills Kitchen in Cincinnati, Ohio. They spent the afternoon doing everything from cutting and preparing food to serving meals to guests and cleaning up.

Our team worked with a few members of a local youth group and some other volunteers who are there regularly.

Father Thomas Bokenkotter, founder of the Over-The-Rhine Kitchen, the Oldest Soup Kitchen in Cincinnati, as well as the Walnut Hills Kitchen and the Walnut Hills Pantry, opened the kitchen to provide guests with nutritious hot meals in a clean, kind and welcoming environment.
Their mission statement is “To help alleviate hunger in our community by feeding the poor in an environment of respect, care and hospitality." They call the people they serve our ‘Guests,’ because they want them to feel welcomed and to maintain their dignity during what is a trying time in their lives.

Living Fit with All-Stars

The partnership that began last summer between FOX Sports Ohio and the Columbus After-School All-Stars (ASAS) is still going strong!

On Friday, July 29th, over 1,000 kids, ages 7 – 17, participated in the Columbus After-School All-Stars’ 2011 Live Fit Challenge held at The Ohio State University’s French Field House. The event was a full day of sports, fitness, enrichment, and brain game clinics and competition. Kids that participated in the event were challenged to take charge of their own health, to stand against child obesity, and to be advocates for their generation’s well-being.

FOX Sports Ohio employees got in on the action by volunteering for the event and engaging kids in various fitness activities.

Having been an athlete most of my life I know the importance of eating a balanced meal and being active. It’s important for the mind and the body. I was thrilled to volunteer for the Live Fit Challenge and give the kids a variety of ideas on ways to stay active. Jumping jacks, push-ups or yoga, it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you’re having fun! – Jacqueline Bryant, Marketing & Sales Coordinator
It was an honor to be a part of such a wonderful and important event. Encouraging kids to get active, play outside and live a healthy lifestyle is something that most adults need to be reminded to do as well. After-School All-Stars presented those ideas in a very interactive and entertaining way. We look forward to being a part of it again next year. – Stephanie Mileham, Marketing Manager
Over the past 10 years, ASAS Columbus has served more than 150,000 economically disadvantaged children through events like the 2011 Live Fit Challenge.
